About PlantAtlas

A field guide to houseplants built on data, not guesswork.

Our Mission

PlantAtlas exists because most houseplant advice online is vague, contradictory, or lifted from the same underresearched sources. We set out to build a reference that treats plant care the way a field guide treats natural history: precise, structured, and grounded in what the species actually needs — not what happens to sound appealing.

Every guide we publish starts with primary horticultural and botanical sources. We note what varies by variety, by season, and by environment. We flag when the science is uncertain rather than papering over it with confident-sounding generalities.

Who Writes PlantAtlas

PlantAtlas content is produced by The PlantAtlas Field Desk, a small editorial team focused on indoor horticulture. Our lead researcher is Mara Ellison, who specializes in tropical and subtropical houseplants with a focus on making care data legible to everyday growers.

This is not a personal blog. We do not write about our own plants, our apartment, or our weekend trips to the nursery. The voice is institutional because the goal is reliable reference — the kind of source you can return to in six months and still trust.

Editorial Independence

Our care recommendations are not influenced by sponsors, product partners, or affiliate commissions. When we link to a product, we note it clearly. When we recommend something, the recommendation stands on its own merits.

We participate in the Amazon Associates program. See our affiliate disclosure for full details on how that relationship works and how we keep it from affecting our editorial choices.

Toxicity Information

We include toxicity data sourced from the ASPCA, the USDA, and established botanical references. However, toxicity thresholds, individual animal responses, and product formulations change. If you suspect a pet or child has ingested a plant, contact your veterinarian, the ASPCA Poison Control hotline (888-426-4435), or Poison Control (1-800-222-1222) immediately. Do not rely solely on this site for medical or veterinary emergencies.
